Bret had been doing some running as part of his workout routine for a while, but in January he decided that if he was going to run, he wanted it to be for a reason. He started working with my brother Ryan and developed a training plan so that he could run some races competitively. He started putting in about 30 miles a week or so and about two months ago decided that he'd run a 1/2 marathon (for those of you who don't know, a 1/2 marathon is 13.1 miles) for the first time. The 1/2 marathon Ryan suggested was the Colorado Marathon which starts up the Poudre Canyon outside of Fort Collins and ends in Old Town Fort Collins. Course Map
On May 4th, Bret and Ryan's girlfriend Danielle ran the race and my brother Wesley and I were volunteers helping out at the finish line. Bret and Danielle had to get up at 4:30am Sunday morning to catch the bus to go up the canyon to the starting line and then keep warm up there until the race started at 7am. Bret wasn't exactly sure how to pace himself for the race since he had never done one that long or on that course, but his goal was to finish at around 1:45:00. He finished at 1:41:02 which was equals out to be 7:43/mile. Very impressive! I am of the opinion that just running a 1/2 marathon is a huge accomplishment alone, and to run it in such a good time on your first time out is really impressive. I am so proud of him and I think he was pleased with his race as well. There were 64 men in his age group and he placed 9th out of that division. He was also 130th out of 1079 runners...not too shabby!! Bret's Results
We were also very proud of Danielle, who is an amazing runner and won the women's 1/2 marathon in 1:16:55 and placed 5th overall (only 4 men beat her!). Danielle's Results She and Ryan have been a huge help to Bret and I know he is very grateful to them for all of their advice and encouragement.
